PBI UII Holds a General Lecture with University of Exeter Lecturer on Learner-Centered Education for English Educators and Prospective English Educators

English Language Education Study Program Universitas Islam Indonesia (PBI UII) remains committed to providing high-quality education and actively contributing in the attainment of Catur Dharma UII through various programs and initiatives. Bringing in an international expert, PBI UII has succeeded in holding the 2023 General Lecture with the theme “To What Extent is Learner-Centered Education Possible in Indonesia?” on Monday, August 7th, 2023. Carried out at the auditorium of the Faculty of Psychology and Social-sciences UII, the lecture was well-attended by prospective-teacher students and English teachers who are members of the Musyawarah Guru Mata Pelajaran (MGMP) or the Teacher Forum in Yogyakarta

General Lecture 2023 started off with an introductory remark by Dr. Phil. Qurotul Uyun, S.Psi., M.Si., Psikolog, the Dean of the Faculty of Psychology and Social-sciences and invited Dr. Nicholas Bremner, a lecturer from the University of Exeter, United Kingdom as the speaker. In her opening remarks, Miss Qurotul Uyun expressed her gratitude to the speaker for coming to share his expertise particularly in the area of learner-centered education to English educators and prospective English educators. She hoped this program would provide them with useful knowledge in putting learner-centered education into practice in their classrooms.

Along with outlining fundamental concepts in learner-centered learning, Dr. Bremner presented ten framework aspects in learner-centered education from his research. These include active participation, interaction, real life skills, adapting to needs, power sharing, autonomy, metacognition, formative assessment, and humanistic role. The lecture then followed by an interactive question and answer session between participants and the speaker, and was wrapped off with a photo session.

Not only did PBI UII assist students to actively improve their expertise and teaching strategy, the study program also allowed English educators members of the Teacher Forum to gain first-hand knowledge from an international and qualified lecturer. This program is expected to enlighten and inspire the General Lecture participants to implement learner-centered education to build the characters and competency of their students.
