DEVELOPING ENGLISH TEACHER COMPETENCE IN THE CURRENT CURRICULUM

English has been widely known as the international language and many people learn to either master or teach it. Its users grow significantly because of creative teaching methods and the awareness to have global engagement. In its development, the function of English as the international language takes some issues that hint both national and international scope. The first issue is about language assessment in Curriculum 2013 pilot project. The second is on the awareness of linguistic diversities which directs us to the importance of Standard English. The third issue is upon the shift characteristics of our learners as the digital native.
In Indonesia, the need to walk the talk on language assessment is in high demand as the curriculum changes. As the Indonesian government via the Ministry of Education and Culture has been implementing pilot projects of the 2013 curriculum, English teachers should prepare themselves to be ready to plan their assessment framework that in accordance with the demand of the curriculum. Even though the paradigm of the English language curriculum still uses genre-based approach, 2013 curriculum also suggests the implementation of scientific approach across the curriculum cycle. In addition, the urge to include the character education components in the assessment framework also needs special consideration.
The international scope puts the concern on the local English and standard English in which language interference is weighed as colours. It turns into a popular issue in which the elements of culture are introduced not only in the matter of values but also of linguistic diversities. It emphasizes the linguistic awareness which are inseparable in English teaching. Furthermore, the improvement of technology and creativity have made our learners as the digital native. Both teachers and students must adapt one another as they have different atmosphere. This difference will affect teachers in relation to the material development, teaching rules, and classroom management as these all need to be wisely considered.
It is the time that language, culture, and technology must walk side-by-side. Teachers, therefore, should be aware of it. In relation to this, this JETA conference will be a good opportunity for teachers, lecturers, and also other practitioners to share ideas, beliefs, and experiences in English Language Teaching and Learning by considering the issues which need either to be embraced or replaced in their teaching enviroment.
OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the conference are as follows:
1. to help teachers be more engaged in the assessment model particularly in the current curriculum.
2. to help teachers develop teaching materials by considering elements needed in the current curriculum.
3. to help teachers be more competent to implement ELT.
4. to help teachers apply national and regional values in their teaching practice.
5. to help teachers improve their cultural awareness through linguistic varieties in ELT.

PARALLEL SESSION SPEAKERS
1. English teachers at Elementary and High Schools (SD, SMP, SMA and SMK) in Yogyakarta and other provinces in Indonesia.
2. University/college/academy lecturers of national and international scope.
PARTICIPATIONS
1. PAPER
a. Full paper including abstract and biodata should be 7-10 pages, A4 paper, 1,5 space, Times New Roman, font 11 and in MS Word 97-2003 Document format.
b. The abstract should include the title, the name(s), affiliation, active email address.
c. The full paper must be submitted not later than 19 May 2014 to email: [email protected] / [email protected] and will be displayed in the conference website.
d. The biodata should include the presenter’s full name(s), academic title, affiliation, e-mail address, phone number, fax number, and title of the paper.
2. TEACHING DEMONSTRATION
Teaching demonstration is a 45 minute session, which should include the lesson plan, material, and media. The students will be the audience.
3. WORKSHOP
Workshops are supposed to result in lesson planning, teaching models, and assessment.
REGISTRATION
Paper presenters and conference participants should register and pay the conference fee to cover the conference kit, refreshment and lunch in the venue.
– For Teachers up to the end of May 2014: IDR 160,000.00 and After 31 of May 2014: IDR 250,000.00
– For Lecturers up to the end of May 2014: IDR 250,000.00 and After 31 of May 2014: IDR 350,000.00
